Notice how the blade at the tips becomes parallel to the circumference.  That is key to the efficiency of the blade design.  You have a very long slicing action against the side of the barrel, or against the side of a base ring in the bottom of the barrel.

As the spinning action throws things toward the outside, chunks get trapped against the side of the barrel, or against a ring mounted at blade height at the bottom of the barrel.  That is where those slicing blade tips take those chunks to a violent death, slicing them up like a samuri warrior.
