Re: [papercreters] Quebec Earth Oven book to d/l free

I got a copy of the mass heater rocket stove book about the same time Charmaine shared the cob oven link.  The mass rocket heater book is great, though it's missing some pictures and illustrations.

I think the rocket stove and cob oven would be a stellar mix . . . rocket stove cob oven.  The rocket stove could be used to heat the mass before and during cooking.  It would take a bit if figuring and practice to figure out how much fuel to use . . . because the cob absorbs and disburses heat slowly it would take some practice . . .

Yeah, I know, I can never leave an idea alone . . . I'm working toward hypocaust heating using a rocket stove.  I think this is an excellent interim heating scheme until PAHS gets conditioned.

Also (yeah, yeah, see above note), I think a self stoking pellet rocket stove hypocaust heater would be the absolute cats' whiskers . . .

As a final note on rocket stoves, if you order written material from Cob Cottage, make SURE you insist they mail it in an unbendable envelope.  My copy came bent nearly in half (ruined), which was a big disappointment (I LOVE books and this is a total desecration).  I plan to write Cob Cottage an unpleasant letter with a picture of the book's condition.  This damage was totally preventable.

I also got a copy of Homing Instinct.  It's a good thought inspiring book.  It doesn't have anything on rubble trench foundation, which is the most economical . . . found that disappointing, but still think the book is a great one to get/have if you're considering a new home.  There are some info hole here and there, but the design and floorplan stuff is excellent.  I will use it extensively putting together my house plans to submit to the building dept.

"The Bread Ovens of Quebec" by Lise Boily and Jean-Francois Blanchette
This is a thorough study of the traditions that arose around bread baking in the rural areas of Quebec up until the middle of this century with a focus on the unique clay ovens that were ubiquitious in that state. Detailed building instructions and excellent photographs throughout. A most inspiring book relating bread baking to the local ecology, economy and community in a way that is lost to industrial society. This book tugs at our hearts and points the way back.
