[papercreters] Re: Styrocrete anybody?

Greetings,

I am new to this group. I saw the styrocrete question and felt
I had to join in. I don't have practical experience, equipment,
capital or land. What I do have is interest, some small background
in engineering, (okay, a degree), and some of the mathematics of
Peter Pearse.

I guess I'm one of those guys who want to see it tried, wants to
know how it works out, but doesn't have the resources to do it.

Pearse showed that three-dimensional space could be filled by
multiple, continuous periodic matrices. I don't know how much detail
to go into here on this topic, as it is difficult to explain in plain
text, but I'll try to give you a little to go on.

There are basically four to six general types of continuous,
periodic, space-filling matrices: tetrahedral, cubic, rhombic
dodecahedral, truncated octahedral, octet truss, and non-symmetrical
or irregular types that approximate the foregoing. Multiple matrices
that simultaneously fill the same space are complementary, for
example: a rhombic dodecahedral matrix interspersed with an octet
truss, or a couple of interspersed cubic matrices. Ball bearings of
uniform size will arrange themselves in a rhombic dodecahedral
matrix, (what mathematicians call a "closest packing array"). Living
cells often form a sort of truncated octahedral matrix, (Kelvin
Tetrakaidecahedral minimal surface encapsulation). Natural and
artificial foams form non-symmetrical or irregular patterns, even if
all of the bubbles are of the same volume.

The strongest of these are the triangulated trusses. These are
the shapes you typically can't get, the patterns formed in space by
connecting the centers of the bubbles of the foam. The matrix you
get from open-cell foam is spongy and weak, mostly tetrahedral.
That, I suspect, is what most fiberfoamcrete has been so far.

What does this all mean? I think it means that if you want
strength, yours should be mostly a closed-cell structure. If you're
making StyroCrete, by all means include some fiber for strength, but
don't aerate it! Don't whip it into a foam! The air you want to
have in it is encapsulated in the styrofoam already. You don't want
flakes or plates of extruded foam, like fast-food containers, egg
cartons or styrofoam plates; leave those for others to melt down into
something else. You want spherical, expanded styrofoam beads of
uniform size. Actual size of the beads doesn't matter much if
they're uniform, as long as your paper fibers aren't too short. As
hard as it may be to believe, the weight savings will be about the
same. Sonic or ultrasonic vibration may be useful to help drive out
the air during mixing, or to help things pack and settle after the
pour.

If memory serves, in theory you could get over seventy percent
of your volume replaced by styrofoam beads with minimal or no loss of
rigidity compared to normal concrete!

This is one I'd like to see tried and tested. Theory predicts a
star performer. Please post results.

Theo.

Get Barry Fuller's video from livingin paper.com. But if you are imaginative and have the ability I think you should improve on his design by using something other than a stock tank.

[papercreters] Sun Ray- dome on bus

oops.. I see my typing/spelling is horrid on last email-- it is its,
not it's, as I typed-- got it?

[ from sentence: "...amazing in it's use of no linear or straight
lines"] I try not to ruin the English language further by adding
errors to emails!

OK here is a fun bus SunRay adorned with a dome and skylight

His use of thick cut shingles appeal to many, and Chris 3Crow too I am
sure! I got a bunch of these a few years ago, and wanted to cover my
house with them, and let the moss grow here too...but neighbors looked
askance, so I am covering a craft shed instead-- funky lives!

[papercreters] Sun Ray Kelly website- about organic structures

Many of you may know of builder "Sun Ray Chi" - as he goes by... he
cheerfully runs around naked a lot, & his Buddha house was featured
on HGTV- ( but they showed him naked from the waist up only ( ; > )

Along with his kids and friends, and students from his School of
Natural Living, SunRay has over the last 30 years created a small
community of fantastic homes on his property in northwestern Washington
state. Starting in the 1970s with the pyramid-shaped Earth House, it
was eventually followed by the Garden House, Sky House, the sculpted
cob Yogurt, and other whimsical creations that grew up from the site
using almost exclusively local materials.

I love the stone encrusted bathroom. shown in that house ( click thru
the site on projects- Buddha house) and also the Garden House is
amazing in it's use of no linear or straight lines

.. but check out his other uses of logs and bent wood, he had also
built with HUGE multi-ton bales that are drum shaped... he attended
and amused us at natural building events on the west coast, and is a
real creative person, a friend made him this website, and I am glad to
have one place that exhibits many pics of his wild and crazy buildings

even if you ( collectively: any of you) never build as he does you can
find something energetic and fun in his approach for bringing your
own ideas to fruition

Hey everyone.   Here is another volunteer opportunity.  For those of us that like this sort of thing, this might be one of the most fun positions within our developing Papercreters organizational structure.  It's a chance to be creative and accomplish a lot.  If I didn't have so much on my plate, this is the position I would jump all over given this chance.  Sadly I can't keep up with everything and do the kind of quality work this position deserves.

Speak up quickly.  We might have several people rushing to jump on this one.  I'm sure we'll also have several people interested in helping whoever chooses to lead us in this effort.

The needed testing equipment will focus on using common everyday
items we all have laying around. The procedures should be simple
enough that most anyone can perform most of the tests. This testing
program is not intending to produce fancy official documents. The
expectations are to generate some good approximate numbers for
reference. Highly precise calibrated results are not practical using
this technique. We should be able to learn a lot more about our
favorite material and be able to have one person's results confirmed
by another volunteer tester. We will use this informal testing as a
guide to determine what makes sense to pursue for inclusion in a
Papercrete Building Code. Our informal testing will be critical in
narrowing down the possibilities and helping us make

improving and learning even after papercrete is part of the building
code.

They will work closely with AJ Welmers, our Recipe Researcher, to see
that all the data is collected and input into our database for
everyone to refer to. This volunteer will also be a primary contact
person for members that are interested in performing some testing.
They will advise members as needed in helping them setup their own
home testing system. This may be one of the most interesting
positions on our Code Team. If you enjoyed high school chemistry lab

[papercreters] papercrete in the humid tropics

Hello,

my name is Sergio and I live in Suriname which has a hot humid climate. Now I read in the literature that papercrete is susceptible to moist air, in that it can deteriorate easier. Some people mentioned that a waterproof coat can take care of this problem. Now my main concern is drying the papercrete. In dry humid climates it takes almost 2 weeks for the papercrete to dry, but here it takes much longer. So how can I dry the papercrete in such a way that the costs do not become too high and the process is relatively fast? As an alternative, is it also possible to use an additive which makes it waterproof? I would guess not, but maybe I'm ill informed. Any help on this matter would be more than welcome. I was thinking of using a dehumidfier in combination with a fan in an inclosed space, but am not yet sure about the costs.

greetings,
Sergio

[papercreters] Re: Styrocrete anybody?

In some ways Clyde Curry's perlite enhanced mix might be somewhat
similar. Check his posting last week.

Keep in mind that styrofoam (Expanded polystyrene, EPS) is open celled
and will take on some moisture. Extruded polystyrene, XPS, is closed
cell, denser, and handles moisture better. This does not make one
material better than the other, just different.

If I remember correctly, Steve Kornher uses something like what you
suggest for his lightweight roofing structures. I don't remember where
I read that. Possibly on FEN. Check the Papercreters links under the
non-papercrete but cool folder for "Flying Concrete". You'll see some
of his amazing work.

Torturing/abusing spammers is legal isn't it?

If it's not legal, it should be. Heck it should not only be legal,
it should be encouraged. I've got my dull table knife at the ready.

[papercreters] Re: Bamboo?????

Hi Nick, given what looks like Yucca whiplei (sic) behind spaceman,
it may be carrizo aka the cane native to parts of the lower Colorado
Desert. What it looks like to me is Arundo donax (sic) which is a
nasty f-ing invasive non native. If so, pulverize all of them.
Along with their ^&^%$# brethren tamarisk!!

, I HAVE MADE SMALL TEST PANELS OF EPS, CEMENT,GLENIUM 30-30 BY
MASTER BUILDERS, PVA FIBER, AND REGULAR CEMENT FIBERS.(EPS IS
EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE)
I bucket mixed everything except the EPS with drywall blade and drill
and added EPS last as much as I thought the mix would encapsulate,
then poured into mold.

Results, I thought were great, nice light insulated panel, so well we
are going to use to infill other insulation on our dome and ext
walls.

Then as last layer add thin, high fiber mix to cover and protect it.

Best is to buy EPS block fill as it is 3/8 peices down to fines which
you need.

Vermiculite, and pearlite also work great for stronger panels and
fireproof.Just not quite as light or insulative ,but more structural
strength.

Not rocket science, just toy with your mixes and watch out if using
bucket mixer as will throw mix everywhere until you get your right
speeds. Use mix blade nearly same diamter as bucket size, everything
mixes quick.

Best of.

Re: [papercreters] Blade surprise

Probably, but doesn't the heat of welding do that? I didn't temper before welding, and the welds seem to be strong enough. I made sure by welding all four sides of the overlap, top and bottom. I'm not too sure how high carbon these blades are, they bent readily enough.
